CIMA E1 Syllabus C. Data And The Finance Function - Data Modelling - Notes 4 / 8
What is data modelling?
Data Modelling
Data modelling is taking an organisation’s data requirements and laying them out in a way that is easy to turn them into computer code.
To do this, there are three stages:
Conceptual - To organise, scope and define business concepts and rules
Logical - To develop a technical map of rules and data structures
Physical - Implementation of the database
Advantages of data modelling are:
Provides a consistent foundation for handling data
Achieves regulatory compliance by ensure that data is complete and secure
Consistency of naming conventions and values ultimately underpin and systematic and reliable database
Quality of data is enhanced because data modelling provides an organisation with a well-planned approach to its data, ensuring completeness and facilitating a high quality data warehouse
