The two dimensions of the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict handling strategies are:
Cooperativeness
Assertiveness
There are 5 strategies. They are:
Competing - In this strategy, both parties do not wish to cooperate. Due to this, additional conflict can occur with damage to the organisation and to one or both parties.
Collaborating - This strategy aims to achieve a win-win outcome.
Compromising - Both parties lose out and there may be a better solution if an alternative approach was taken.
Avoiding - Both parties avoid conflict. Lack of effort to deal with causes of the conflict will mean that conflict is likely to recur.
Accommodating - One party puts the other party's interests first to resolve the conflict. Suppression of interests result in one party losing out and difficulties may still remain.
The diagram below shows which strategy is used in each case based on the degree of assertiveness in pursuit of one’s interests AND the level of cooperation in attempting to satisfy others’ interests.
