Barriers to Communication 4 / 7

Barriers to communication include:

  1. Using words that provoke an emotional response.

  2. Filtering out elements that the communicator does not want to deal with.

  3. Limiting the encoding/decoding capabilities of the receiver.

  4. Sending too much information i.e. creating an information overload.
For example, all messages from daily updates, to social events, to key operational messages will now be sent on email to ensure documentary evidence is in place should it be needed. This creates an information overload.

  5. Cultural values. For example, information relating to an organisational restructure is provided on a strictly 'need to know' basis.
