What does 'Noise' mean?

Noise can refer to the external sounds which can hamper the communication process.

For example, A phone conversation with a client is interrupted as a result of interference on the line.

It limits the encoding/decoding capabilities of the sender and receiver.

Types of noise:

  1. Environmental/physical noise - This type of noise physically prevents the receiver from hearing or seeing the message. Examples include loud music or people talking in the background.

  2. Physiological noise - It refers to actual physical barriers within the sender or receiver which affects the message getting through. Examples include hearing loss, etc.

  3. Semantic noise - This type of noise is due to different understanding of words. For example, using jargon, etc.

  4. Psychological noise - This type of noise can be caused by the attitude of the sender and receiver.
