ACAS Codes of Practice 7 / 19

The Advisory Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS) has published a disciplinary code of practice.

It states that disciplinary procedures should be in writing, specify to whom they apply, individuals should be given an explanation for any penalty imposed, etc.

It also states that disciplinary procedures should specify the levels of management which have the authority to take the various forms of disciplinary action and provide for individuals to be informed of the complaints against them and to be given an opportunity to reply.

Other recommended procedures state that no employee will be dismissed for a first offence, except in the cases of gross misconduct.
