CIMA E2 Syllabus B. Managing people performance - Disciplinary Action - Notes 4 / 19
What is the purpose of disciplinary action?
The main purpose of disciplinary action by management is to change employee behaviour.
An example of employee behavior that would need to be changed is persistent lateness, missing deadlines, or absenteeism.
Disciplinary action is progressive which means that the severity of the penalty increases with each offence.
The steps of disciplinary action are:
The informal talk - This is used when there are no previous records of disciplinary action.
The oral warning - If there is another offence, the employee is given an oral warning.
Written warning - The next step is a written warning.
Suspension - Fraud or theft could lead to suspension while an investigation is being carried on.
Demotion/Transfer - If problems continue to exist, a demotion or transfer is possible.
