CIMA E2 Syllabus B. Managing people performance - Health and Safety - Notes 3 / 19
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1975 (HASAWA)
HASAWA has listed the following employer responsibilities for all organisations with more than 5 employees:
Maintain and provide safe plants and systems.
Introduce controls to reduce risks.
Maintain a safe workplace.
Carry out risk assessments to address all risks that might cause harm in the workplace
Provide information in the workplace about how employees and others are protected and instruct them how they can deal with the risks.
Display Health and Safety Regulations in a prominent position in every workplace or provide each worker with a copy
It requires every organisation to prepare a written statement of their policy for health and safety, provide protective clothing to employees free of cost, enforce safety regulations, and make every employee aware of possible hazards.
Health and safety training must be included in the induction of new staff members. Most organisations have safety representatives who are appointed by the trade union and who should have at least 2 years' experience in a similar industry. They will undergo necessary trainings arranged for them by the trade union.
Both management and employees are responsible for an employee’s health and safety in the workplace. An example of employee responsibility would be to not interfere intentionally or recklessly with machinery or equipment.
An organisation is required to notify authorities of any accident at work which resulted in death or a major injury or more than three days off work along with detailed records of the incident.
Benefits of health and safety controls for employers:
The legal requirements of health and safety controls are met, reducing the chance of penalties and fines.
Costs are reduced by preventing accidents and illnesses. However having health and safety controls DOES NOT mean that accidents will never happen in the workplace
Company image and reputation are improved, and the company is protected from a poor health and safety record.
Improve morale of employees.
