Recent thinking on leadership has brought the concept on the transformation of a leader.
Bennis has explained that:
A transactional leader - sees their relationship with their followers in terms of a trade, they give
followers what they want in exchange for service, loyalty and compliance.A transformational leader sees their role as inspiring and motivating others at levels beyond mere compliance.
They use vision, example and persuasion to convince the group to a pursue a new purpose.
They have foresight and empathise with group member’s needs, and empower group members to make them more effective.
Here, employees are free to come up with new ideas and innovate.
Boyd explains that the new type of transformational leader needs a different range of skills from traditional management. They are:
Anticipatory skills
Visioning skills
Value congruence skills
Empowerment skills
Self-understanding
