According to Belbin, there are 9 team roles and all of them should be fulfilled for an effective team:
Co-ordinator/leader - They control and organise the group's activities and are usually stable, dominant extroverts.
Shaper - They are committed to the task and are second in command. They may be aggressive and challenging and will always promote activity. They are usually anxious, dominant extroverts.
Plant - They usually are a dominant introvert with high IQ and come up with original ideas.
Monitor evaluator - They analyse options and are usually a stable introvert with a high IQ.
Implementer (company worker) - They turn decisions into tasks and are practical and efficient.
Resource investigator - They tend to pick up others' ideas and add to them. They act as a bridge to the outside world and are usually a dominant, stable extrovert.
Team worker - They support all members, defuse potential conflict situations, and promote unity. They are concerned about the relationships within the team.
Completer-finisher - They always chase their timetable to meet their deadlines and are usually an anxious introvert. They have a keen eye for detail and are reluctant to involve others.
Expert/specialist - They provide knowledge to solve technical problems.
Research on group effectiveness has concluded that the most consistently successful groups comprise a range of roles undertaken by various members.
