Negative Effects of Team Work 8 / 10

The Abilene paradox, Group think, and Conformity are associated with the negative effects of team working.

Conformity

Conformity means that individual group members can be pressurised to agree with decisions which they know to be wrong.

The Abilene Paradox

The Abilene Paradox is an implicit and unconscious group process which states that the group can be led to take decisions and end up with an outcome that none of the individual members wanted.

Groupthink

According to Irving Janis, Groupthink can be described as the homogeneity of objectives and thinking to extremes in group work, resulting in an agreement without critically testing, analysing and evaluating ideas. The members try to minimise conflict and reach consensus without critically evaluating ideas.
