Project Initiation Document 5 / 5

What is a PID?

A Project Initiation Document(PID) provides a common understanding of a project by defining the project's overall boundaries. It is part of the ‘identification of need’ phase of the project life cycle.

The purpose of a PID is to:

  1. Act as a base document against which progress can be assessed.

  2. Justify the project.

  3. Define the project and its scope.

A PID normally contains these elements in the following order:

  • Purpose statement

  • Project Objectives

  • The approach to be taken to the project

  • Key deliverables and desired outcomes

  • Any areas excluded from the project

  • Any constraints, such as budget or available resources

  • Any assumptions on which the PID is based

  • List of major stakeholders
