CIMA E2 Syllabus B. Managing people performance - Leadership - Notes
Are leaders and managers the same?
Managers get their power from their position and are usually appointed to their position.
Leaders are more visionary and are influential. Leadership can be defined as the ability to get others to follow willingly. Leadership comes about in a number of ways.
Some leaders are elected, others emerge and some are appointed to a position of authority.
There are 5 types of leaders:
Charismatic - influence arises from personality
Traditional - influence arises from social prejudice
Situational - influence arises from being at the right place at the right time
Appointed - influence arises from position
Functional - influence arises from expertise
Hersey and Blanchard proposed the concept of situational leadership.
It focuses on the readiness of team members to perform a given task.
It is based on the relationship between these 3 factors:
Task behaviour
Relationship behaviour
The level of task and relevant maturity
