The purpose of post completion stage is:

To establish whether the project helped the business to deliver the benefits defined in the original business case.

A Post-completion audit is a meeting held several months after the completion of a project, to review the overall successes and failures of the project.

Its purpose is to ensure that future projects benefit from any lessons learned from the way the project has been delivered, to ensure that there is continuous improvement for projects in the future. They also reduce the tendency towards over-optimism.

A project's failure could be due to the project manager being ineffective at inspiring and motivating the project team, inability to resolve team conflicts, and not acknowledging the team's accomplishments.

Some of the elements of post completion audit report of a project include:

  • Project objectives and outcomes

  • Actual achievement in relation to costs and project schedules.

  • Customer’s original requirement and original project deliverable.

  • The list of deliverables received by the customer.

  • Actual and budgeted time.

  • Effectiveness of management processes.
