Milestones and Control Gates 11 / 16

A milestone is a measure of the progress of a project.

It is an event that is clearly identifiable as a measure of how far the project has progressed and how far it has to run. It can be represented on Gantt charts.

A milestone can also be called a control gate.

A control gate will be passed if the progress of a project meets predefined performance standards, it is only if a control gate is passed that the project can continue.

A control gate gives the project sponsor or steering committee an opportunity to review project progress and make a decision whether to proceed further or to terminate the project.
