Mendelow Matrix

NotesQuizObjective TestMock

The Mendelow Matrix can also be used to prioritise stakeholders.

Each stakeholder can be placed in a specific quadrant after analysing their level of power and interest.

Mendelow Matrix

For example, institutional shareholders who have a high level of power but a low level of interest will be placed in the 'Keep satisfied' quadrant. This also applies to a company with a few shareholders, out of which one main shareholder has minimal interest in running the company, this shareholder should be in the ‘Keep satisfied’ quadrant.

However, if a major shareholder has high power and high interest, they will be the 'Key Player'.

The government has high power but it is unlikely that they will have any interest. So they will be placed in the 'Keep satisfied' quadrant.

Small customers do not have any power and since it is easy to find another supplier, it is likely that will have low interest. They will be part of the 'Minimal effort' quadrant.

Another example would be employees. They would have low power and high interest and would be placed in the 'Keep informed' quadrant.

With relation to a housing development project in a town, the town council will have high interest and high power which is why it will be a 'key player'. Whereas, a university in the same town will have high interest but low power which is why it would go to the 'keep informed' quadrant.

Another example would be a supermarket chain who has purchased land in an area of recognised natural beauty and is now preparing plans for an infrastructure development project. The nature appreciation group would have high interest but low power which is why they would fall into the 'keep informed' quadrant.
