This can be done in 3 ways:

  1. Value chain Analysis

  2. Capability Profile 

    - An assessment of the key processes needed to consistently add value

  3. SWOT analysis 

    - Management need a thorough understanding of the resources to perform a SWOT analysis

Preparing a SWOT analysis in the exam

SW - concerned with the core competencies
OT - concerned with environmental factors

In the exam , simply think “strategically” and write out the 4 lists from information in the case. Then you need to interpret it. This involves ranking the list in terms of priority.

Valuing Resources

The resources could then be valued using the VIRO approach

  • Value (does the resource provide a competitive advantage)
    Imitable? How costly to imitate it
    Rarity - how unique is the resource
    Organisation - does the organisation utilise the resource fully
